Everton 2-1 Wigan

Everton 2-1 Wigan

Everton grabbed their first league points of the season thanks to an injury-time penalty from Leighton Baines.

Some of Wigan's tackling - they picked up six bookings - enraged the Goodison Park faithful but it looked as if Roberto Martinez's men were going to grab a point at least.

They led early in the second period through a Paul Scharner header before Louis Saha grabbed his fourth goal of the season to pull Everton level.

And the home side had to wait until the third minute of injury-time and Emmerson Boyce's foul on Jo for Baines to have the chance to smash home the penalty winner.

Defender Sylvain Distin made his Everton debut while another new signing, £10million

Russian winger Diniyar Bilyaletdinov, was on the bench.

Everton made just one change from the side which lost their last league game at Burnley, with Marouane Fellaini dropped to the bench to allow Distin into the starting XI and Phil Neville reverting to a midfield role.

Wigan retained just four of the players who were knocked out of the Carling Cup by Blackpool in midweek - Michael Pollitt, Scharner, Boyce and Mohamed Diame.

With Everton likely to unveil more signings before Tuesday's deadline - they are believed to have agreed a fee for Atletico Madrid defender Johnny Heitinga - boss David Moyes will soon have a new look about his team.

But they started the day bottom of the table and clearly needed a change of fortune.

Everton started brightly, with Tim Cahill seeing a diving header from a Baines corner go just wide, before Pollitt did well to turn over a fierce 12-yarder from Jack Rodwell.

Wigan's tackles were certainly flying in and eventually referee Lee Probert got his book out to caution Diame for a foul on Neville.

Wigan had created very little, although Charles N'Zogbia saw a shot from the edge of the area deflected wide.

But Everton almost scored with the best move of the half. Rodwell's turn and pass finding Leon Osman, who instantly sent Cahill racing away down the left.

The Australian's cross found Saha powering into the six-yard box, but Pollitt managed to get his body in the way of the striker's shot.

Skipper Mario Melchiot was the next Wigan man booked, for bringing down Steven Pienaar.

Even Moyes felt the strength of Wigan's tackling. As he bent down to collect the ball as it crossed the touchline in front of him, he was sent spinning by Hendry Thomas, who was sliding in trying to keep it in play. Both men finished in a heap on the track.

A minute later Boyce was cautioned for a foul on Saha, Wigan having just sent on Jason Scotland for the injured Diame.

Thomas was soon also in the book for breaking from the wall to charge down a Neville free-kick. By then Wigan had racked up 17 infringements to Everton's three in the opening period.

Within seconds of the restart, both Saha and Cahill failed to convert a Tony Hibbert cross as it flashed across the six-yard box, before Boyce made a brave saving tackle to stop Osman's 10-yard effort.

But it was Wigan who broke the deadlock after 56 minutes. N'Zogbia crossed from the right and Scharner arrived unmarked on the far post to produce a diving header that Tim Howard could not keep out.

A minute later Leon Osman was booked for a foul on Hugo Rodallega, by now Wigan were coming out of their shell.

And they almost had a second after 60 minutes when Jordi Gomez side-footed a Melchiot cross against a post.

However, Everton were level after 62 minutes, Saha emerging from a ruck of players to head home a Baines corner.

Everton then sent on Fellaini for Osman and in the melee of the first corner after the Belgian arrived, Joseph Yobo saw a towering header cleared off the line by Hendry.

Wigan sent on Won Hee Cho for Thomas, while Everton replaced Saha with Brazilian striker Jo.

Wigan replaced Rodallega with on-loan Chelsea winger Scott Sinclair with 10 minutes left, before Howard saved well from a Gomez free-kick.

N'Zogbia was booked for a foul and then Scharner became Wigan's sixth caution for bringing down Jo.

Everton sent on Bilyaletdinov with three minutes of normal time left for Pienaar, as they piled on the pressure.

Wigan broke out with Sinclair racing 70 yards to have his shot blocked by Howard.

But three minutes into injury-time, Boyce brought down Jo and Baines smashed home the penalty.

Rossi taking nothing for granted

Rossi taking nothing for granted

Valentino Rossi has predicted that team-mate Jorge Lorenzo will provide his stiffest opposition in the MotoGP World Championship.
Rossi, who won the last round at Brno in the Czech Republic after Lorenzo crashed, heads the series standings by 50 points but is not taking winning the championship for granted.
Last year's race at Indianapolis was hit by a hurricane and Rossi hopes the weather in America is better this weekend.
Rossi admitted: "As I said in Brno, it would be stupid for us to relax and consider the championship won, anything can happen and we know that Lorenzo will be very strong this weekend and determined to make up for the last two races. We must keep focused."
Rossi won at Indy last year despite the hurricane, with team-mate Lorenzo finishing third.
He added: "Every year is a different story so we won't know where we are until we start our work on Friday afternoon.
"Last year I had a great win but, like everyone, I really hope that was the only hurricane we ever have to race in and that this time the conditions are more 'normal'."
Lorenzo, who earlier this week signed a deal to remain with Yamaha for the 2010 season, is also eager for better conditions at Indy on Sunday.
"Last year was strange, maybe we should have finished earlier because Hurricane Ike was pretty strong; this time I hope everything will be a little bit easier," said the Spaniard.
"I am feeling confident because I've felt good in the last races, riding very fast since the beginning of the weekend, despite what's happened on Sunday.
"I am not thinking about the championship any more but I would like to win a race again after more than three months, especially here in Indy when it's the centenary of the track. It's a busy two weeks, with Misano straight after, but we're ready."

Ferguson preparing for torrid time suffering a tough draw in the group stage.

Ferguson preparing for torrid time suffering a tough draw in the group stage.

Sir Alex Ferguson revealed that Man United face a grueling test in the Champions League after
The Red Devils have been drawn in Group B, and will have to travel far and wide to Besiktas in Turkey and CSKA Moscow as well as German champions Wolfsburg.

The finalists of last term seem to have suffered the most difficult draw of all the Premier League clubs involved, who all were fortunate enough to avoid Barcelona, Real Madrid, Inter and AC Milan.

Ferguson is not a fan of long away trips in Europe, and he told the club's official website: "These are difficult ties especially the trips to Russia and Turkey.

"CSKA have developed strongly in the last few years and games in Turkey are always difficult.

"We also know the quality that we're up against with Wolfsburg, with what they achieved in the Bundesliga last season."

Ferguson's mood will not have been lightened by the knowledge that United face two major Premier League clashes after their long trips - they are at home to Manchester City after travelling to Turkey and away at Liverpool four days after their Moscow journey.

David Gill admitted the draw could have been kinder to United.

He told Sky Sports News: "I think pot four was the interesting one, I think most clubs would have preferred not to get the German champions out of that, but we got it.

"But overall we have to be happy with it and look forward to starting in three weeks. Besiktas away, long trip first one, but we will see where we go from there."

United would have preferred to have avoided a trip to Istanbul first up, while a lengthy trek to Russia lies ahead when they face CSKA.

Gill, though, is adamant the Red Devils will have no problem coping with travelling to far-flung destinations and admits the club are looking forward to heading back to Moscow - the scene of their 2008 triumph.

"I think you can get psyched out by that sort of thing," he said.

"We are in the competition and we will get on with it and I'm sure it won't affect on the games either side in the Premier League.

"We will look forward to going back to Moscow, after those great scenes in 2008, so we have got to be excited about."

The first round of matches will be played on September 15 and 16.

Donati: Ban Gunners diver Eduardo

Thursday 27th August 2009
Arsenal v Celtic - UEFA Champions league
Donati: Ban Gunners diver Eduardo

Eduardo should be banned for diving in the Champions League play-off round win against Celtic, according to Massimo Donati.

Hoops midfielder Donati wants UEFA to act retrospectively to punish Eduardo, who appeared to throw himself to the ground to win a penalty in the Gunners' 3-1 second-leg win last night.

Donati believes Eduardo should be treated the same way as Lithuania striker Saulius Mikoliunas, who cheated to earn a spot-kick against Scotland at Hampden Park in September 2007.

Video evidence was used by UEFA to punish Mikoliunas, who was given a two-match ban.

"If it is clear on TV then UEFA must act against Eduardo and ban him," said Donati.

"I think he should get a two-match ban because it wasn't a penalty. I told him that and everyone in the Celtic team told him that."

Last night's game was still 0-0 at the time, though Arsenal held a 2-0 advantage from the first leg.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger acknowledged Celtic goalkeeper Artur Boruc did not bring down Eduardo in the penalty incident but claimed his forward was taking evasive action.

Celtic defender Glenn Loovens was in no doubt Eduardo had dived.

"I don't think he even speaks English so there was no point talking to him," Loovens added.

"It is very disappointing but that is football. It's sad it happened to us.

"I don't think it is really fair. But it helped his team take the lead.

"There is a referee and a linesman to see those kind of things."

Champions League Draw Preview

Champions League Draw Preview

Man United could find themselves facing Cristiano Ronaldo when the draw is made for the Champion League group stages on Thursday.

United, Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal are all guaranteed positions among the eight top seeds, meaning they will avoid current European champions Barcelona, but could face Real Madrid, who are one of the eight second-ranked clubs.

There is also another intriguing possibility of Carlo Ancelotti's Chelsea coming face to face with Jose Mourinho's Inter Milan in a group - Inter will also be among the second seeds.

The draw will see 32 teams split into eight groups, each containing a top seed, a second seed, a third seed and a fourth seed.

Bayern Munich, AC Milan and Sevilla are other top seeds, and there are plenty of tough opponents in the other pots. Lyon, CSKA Moscow and Juventus are among the second seeds, while Atletico Madrid, Bordeaux and Stuttgart are in the third pot.

Rangers are also among the second seeds thanks to Fiorentina's away-goals triumph over Sporting Lisbon tonight. If the result had been reversed, the Scottish champions would be third seeds.

The team to avoid among the eight clubs in the fourth pot are Wolfsburg, who were champions of Germany last season.

Such is the strength in depth of Europe's elite club tournament that there is a possibility of any of the English clubs being drawn in a group with Real Madrid, Bordeaux and Wolfsburg.

Big-spending Real Madrid are the bookies' favourites and will view this year's tournament as almost a must-win. Apart from the arrival of Ronaldo, Kaka and Xavi Alonso, the final in May will be at their home ground the Bernabeu.

As for last season's beaten finalists Manchester United, their striker Dimitar Berbatov insists most clubs will fear being drawn against the English champions.

He told the club's official website: "When you say the name Manchester United it inspires respect in a lot of people. Nobody will fancy playing us."

Berbatov said the taste of defeat in Rome has intensified the players' desire to go one better this time.

"After what happened in last year's final I think we're even more determined in Europe this time around," he added.

"For me, losing in Rome was doubly frustrating because I wasn't at the club when the team won in Moscow. I've never won the Champions League so losing to Barcelona was very upsetting.

"This year our aim is to make it all the way to Madrid. The Bernabeu is one of the best stadiums in the world and I know we're good enough to make it back there and, this time, win it."

Seedings for Thursday's draw:

Top seeds: Barcelona (Spa) UEFA co-efficient 121.9, Chelsea (Eng) 118.9, Liverpool (Eng) 118.9, Man Utd (Eng) 111.9, AC Milan (Ita) 110.6, Arsenal (Eng) 106.9, Sevilla (Spa) 100.9, Bayern Munich (Ger) 98.3.

Second seeds: Lyon (Fra) 91.0, Inter Milan (Ita) 87.6, Real Madrid (Spa) 78.9, CSKA Moscow (Rus) 71.5, Porto (Por) 68.3, AZ Alkmaar (Hol) 64.8, Juventus (Ita) 63.5, Rangers (Sco) 56.6.

Third seeds: Olympiakos (Gre) 52.6, Marseille (Fra) 48.0, Dinamo Kiev (Ukr) 46.4, Stuttgart (Ger) 45.3, Fiorentina (Ita) 42.6, Atletico Madrid (Spa) 41.9, Bordeaux (Fra) 40.0, Besiktas (Tur) 32.4.

Fourth seeds: Wolfsburg (Ger) 21.3, Standard Liege (Bel) 21.1, Maccabi Haifa (Isr) 17.1, FC Zurich (Swi) 14.1, Rubin Kazan (Rus) 9.5, Unirea Urziceni (Rom) 8.8, APOEL Nicosia (Cyp) 4.0, Debreceni (Hun) 1.633.

California Big Wave Surfing - Riding 70ft Waves in the Golden State

California Big Wave Surfing  - Riding 70ft Waves in the Golden State
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Chris_Warner]Chris Warner

California is home to a multitude of surf spots, among them three spots know to big wave surfers around the world. All three produce dangerous waves breaking over 20 feet in height. The big wave season usually runs from roughly October through March, although Dec through Feb is the peak. These spots all break in deep water on huge swells with bottom contours that rise steeply so that all the energy is saved until the wave breaks and peels.

Mavericks

The most well know of the California big wave spots. This cold water wave breaks a half mile off Pillar Point in Half Moon Bay, 25 miles south of San Francisco. It is mostly a right breaking wave over 20 foot, although lefts can be surfed under 20 feet.  It was surfed virtually alone be Jeff Clark from 1975 until 1990 when it finally became known to the rest of the world. Now it is home to the annual Mavericks Surf Contest. Supposedly there were 100ft waves seen year during a huge swell a few hears ago, but nobody surfed them. Documented waves have been surfed here almost 70ft high. The inside is a nasty mess of boulders called "The Boneyard". Hawaiian big wave surfer Mark Foo died here in 1994.

Cortes Bank

This spot is created by  a chain of underwater mountains in the Pacific Ocean. It is about 100 miles west of San Diego and about 40 miles south-west of San Clemente Island. It's shallowest point is only 6ft beneath the surface.  These peaks are what cause the waves to break on huge swells.  Although first surfed in 1990, really big waves weren't surfed until 2001 as part of "Project Nepture". It now attracts a group of surfers every year, despite being only accessible by the long boat ride. Biggest documented waves surfed here are about 70ft, although it is theorized that this spot could produce rideable 100ft waves.

Ghost Trees

This big wave surfing location is off the 18th hole of the Pebble Beach Golf Course. This is a very scenic location on 17 mile drive between Monterey and Carmel. The deep water of the Carmel Canyon just offshore refracts long period west swells. This creates waves 4-5 times larger than the surrounding area. Nasty rocks on the inside.  It only breaks when gigantic and only about a half dozen times a year. Big wave surfer Peter Davi died surfing Ghost Trees in 2007. Personal watercraft used to tow surfers into huge waves were banned recently, making this mostly tow-in only spot "illegal" on the biggest days when  such craft be necessary.

Big Wave surfing is extremely dangerous and the vast majority of surfers in California never surf these spots. They are for dedicated, fit surfers willing to take serious risks for that ultimate rush. For the rest of us this is a spectator sport. These three spots have put the Golden State on the big wave map. Your best chance to see any of these would probably be at Mavericks. Large surf forecast services like Surfline can tell you when the these big waves combine with the right wind conditions for it to draw the big wave riders. You will want to bring your binoculars as the waves break very far out. Ghost Trees does not break as often but can also be seen from land. Obviously Cortes Bank can only be seen from a boat so a television or computer is as close as most of us will get. There may be more big wave spots waiting to be discovered in the more remote areas of Northern California.

Longboard Surfing - Learn How to Surf the Easier Way

Longboard Surfing - Learn How to Surf the Easier Way
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Chris_Warner]Chris Warner

Longboard surfing is the best way to learn how to surf. This is not to say that you can't learn on smaller surfboards such a shortboard, but the those boards will take much longer to learn on and amount to greater frustration along the way. Better to surf those boards later. Notice the title says the "Easier Way" not the "Easy Way". That is because I don't want to imply that by simply using a longboard will make learning to surf easy.

Longboards are just more forgiving than other boards. People who just start surfing simply don't have conditioned shoulders. Conditioning comes with time and paddling a longboard will be hard enough but much easier than a shortboard and even funboards/fishboards.

Longboards are more stable. Although less maneuverable than other boards it's the stability you want when you start out. This is especially true for performing the pop up and assuming the proper stance on the board. You can take more time getting to your feet (but still not too long) and also find foot placement a little more forgiving than other surfboards.

The gentle waves you will seek as a beginner are the perfect match for a longboard. The ideal beginners surf spot will have small, clean, slow breaking waves. Longboards are best under these conditions because they have maximum flotation and can catch these waves even when smaller boards can't.

Many beginners want to go to the coolest looking boards which is usually a shortboard. This is  a common mistake that usually only leads to frustration in the water. You want to to be catching some waves, even tiny ones, as soon as possible. The fun you get will keep you motivated and after enough time and practice you can switch to a smaller surfboard if you desire. You really want to start out by taking a lesson. The instructor will usually start you out on a soft top longboard which is ideal for learning the basics. The other alternative is to have a friend that you know can surf take you out and show you the ropes, provided that he/she or you can provide a longboard.

Because of the paddle, stability, and small wave catching ability, longboards are ideal for learning to surf. Surfing mainly just requires persistence and practice. Anybody can learn to surf with a longboard and enjoy catching waves.

Archery Arrow Rest

Archery Arrow Rest
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Ted_Lake]Ted Lake

Arrow Rests

With all the technology in archery going on today, one of the most important devices on your compound bow is the arrow rest.  Many bowhunters have problems while trying to perfect their arrow flight when using broadheads, even though their arrows have been spined correctly and there are no mechanical problems with their bow.  You’ve paper tested your arrow and you cannot get rid of the wobble.  The problem, more often than not, is contact with your arrow fletching with your arrow rest.  Maybe you have tried using smaller fletching, but then your broadhead tends to steer your arrow when using a saddle type of arrow rest.

The newly styled type of fall-away archery arrow rest has many advantages over the traditional style of a cradle type of arrow rest.  The fall-away arrow rest will eliminate any contact made by your fletching.  This will help improve your arrow flight and overcome any minor inconsistencies with your archery shooting form.  You now can use bigger fletching and get back to helical fletching which will help to steer your arrow rather than your broadhead steering your arrow or hand torque altering your arrow flight.

Most of todays fall-away rests function very well.  In my opinion, the recoil activated fall-away rest seems to work the best.  A disadvantage to the lift up fall-away rest, which is activated by a cable from your bow cable to your arrow rest, is the fact that it’s easy for the arrow to bounce off the launcher while drawing back your bow.  The recoil activated rest requires no cables and is activated by ever so slight of recoil upon release of your arrow.  It is easy to install and seems to be quieter and is the most reliable.  By adding felt or foam rubber to the arrow shelf which is where the arrow will rest before you draw back, will help silence and hold your arrow into position.

These two types of archery fall-away arrow rests come with the most expensive price on the market today.  But remember, even though they are expensive they are worth every penny you spend.  A reliable archery arrow rest will foster a consistent flight of your arrow.  When you have confidence in your arrow flight you will have confidence in your shooting and this will help to make you a better archery hunter.  When it comes to being a better hunter, success and confidence go hand in hand.   Spend the buck and change your luck!

Archery Arrows, Feathers or Vanes

Archery Arrows, Feathers or Vanes
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Ted_Lake]Ted Lake

Feathers or vanes? This question is very common when choosing archery arrows... Which do I use? They say that feathers are more forgiving. Maybe this is so, for target shooting or shooting a recurve or straight bow. Plastic vanes on the other hand are my choice of fletching only because I do a lot of foul weather hunting. There are no real good explanations of which to choose from. Many archers have drawn their own conclusions depending on the type of bow they use. For instance, if you are shooting a recurve or straight bow with a flipper rest (or something similar), then feathers would be my choice.

Today, I shoot a 70 lb. pull, XI Ultima compound bow with a 29 inch arrow. My choice of arrow is Easton Superlite A/C/C 3-49/390. This is an aluminum/carbon graphite arrow with 5 inch straight vanes. This particular combination works very well for me whether I’m shooting targets or hunting. When shooting at targets, I will practice up to 60 yards away, but when hunting I only feel confident shooting at no more than 35 to 40 yards away. I use plastic vanes only because many times during the hunting season it is below freezing and wet. Feathers tend to get wet and freeze, therefore not pliable enough to get a true flight.

If you prefer to use feathers, I recommend you protect the fletching with a coat of hair spray. This will allow the feathers to repel most of the moisture.

When shooting a recurve or straight bow, it is recommended that you use feathers for the simple reason that it is more forgiving when coming out of the bow’s window. This means the feather gives way to your arrow rest or the side of the bow’s window upon release of your arrow. Also I recommend a helical type of fletching. This means that when the feathers are attached to the arrow shaft they are in a slight twist or helical form. This allows your arrow to spin much sooner after your release, which makes the flight of your arrow straighter, right out of your bow.

Choice of colors is also a difficult decision to make. When bow hunting, I prefer to use something that blends in with the surroundings along with a white or brightly colored cock feather. This allows you to see your arrow upon contact with your target or wild game.

I hope that these few suggestions will help you to decide on which to use with your archery arrows… Feathers or vanes.       Good Luck Shooting!!!

Some anglers prefer to wade in the water to catch their fish, whereas others prefer to go into the deeper waters in a fishing boat. Wading in the water may give some fishermen a high because of their proximity to the fish that they are going to catch, but it is not always safe to do so, and staying in a boat to catch your booty is a much better bet. Prior to setting out on a fishing trip it is always safe to make sure that your boat is in good working condition and will not suddenly break down in the middle of the water and leave you stranded. Selecting a boat should also be done according to your needs and should be given a lot of time and thought and not something that you should do in haste.

While thinking of buying a boat you should keep in mind the safety and comfort of those who will be on it. Some kinds of catch require the fishermen to walk around on the deck and this boat has enough space for movement. Being bigger it is also sturdier for bigger catch and is more comfortable for the fishermen to maneuver around.

An offshore boat is required for a deep sea fishing expedition. These offshore boats are around 35 to 45 feet in length and can hold 6 people on board. These boats have to be built strong so that they can withstand the pull of the bigger fish and also the thrust of the ocean water.

A head boat or party boat is also used for fishing expeditions. These boats are built larger and can hold many more people. The party boat offers a lot more of comfort and luxury so that your guests can fish enjoy the water and also relax. Party boats are used for family get together and picnics.

Second-Hand Aluminum Boats - Investing Your Cash In The Wisest Possible Way

Second-Hand Aluminum Boats - Investing Your Cash In The Wisest Possible Way
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Abhishek_Agarwal]Abhishek Agarwal

If you don't wish to spend a lot on your first or fifth fishing boat, buying a second hand aluminum boat can be a good choice of an investment. At the same time be careful and make sure that your boat is in good condition for future use. Do a little bit of research and home work on the boat your willing to purchase. Also examine the boat yourself before purchasing; by doing these you will find out that an aluminum boat is an excellent choice of investment for any person. There are many factors that you have to take into account while buying a boat, so you will have to do a thorough examination of the boat or at least have an expert do it for you; this is surely worth your money.

What and how to check?

The first thing that you have to check on is leaks. Many don't know that an aluminum boat which has been used extensively leaks after a period of time. At this point there are many things that you can do. One, you can buy a new boat that wont give you any problems of leaking. Second, you can get the whole boat sealed professionally, meaning sealing all the seams. Some aluminum boats will not leak. This may be because the boat has been maintained to the best standards or may be it hasn't been used that extensively at sea. So it would be a great idea to invest in these kinds of boats. Buying a welded aluminum fishing boat can be a better choice as these boats don't leak at all. But the only problem with these boats would be the cost at which you would have to buy it.

Whatever be your choice, take time to see how these second hand boats fair at sea. Go on a fishing trip on the boat with its owner. See how the boat handles and see if there are any obvious problems with the boat. Also check the bottom and see if there are any dents or scratches. Unlike wooden boats aluminum boats don't handle well when near rocks and so scratches and dents are caused. There a lot of chances for seams to get damages when in areas like these. Try and avoid areas like these as much as possible.

Take time and examine the aluminum boat that you are thinking of buying. Compare the boats that are available and choose the best one. Be sure that the price you are paying equals the shape, quality and the condition of the boat.

Swimming Lessons - Tips on Choosing Your Swimming Instructor

Swimming Lessons - Tips on Choosing Your Swimming Instructor
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Tan_Jian_Yong]Tan Jian Yong

Whether you are looking to hire a swimming instructor for you or your child, it is important you find a legitimate instructor that knows what they are doing. Swimming lessons can provide a student with information and survival skills needed to make it in the water. Here are some tips to choosing an instructor for you or your child.

The first thing you need to do is shop around. There are a number of places to look for quality instructors. If you are looking for an instructor for your child, ask friends who have kids if they can recommend someone. This allows you to hear first-hand experience about a particular swimming school and teacher.

In addition to asking friends, you can also go to the local recreation center or any swim clubs you may know of. These types of places are constantly holding swimming lessons for people of all age. It is an easy way to talk to instructors and get the information you are looking for.

When tracking down various instructors, it is important you sit down and talk with them to find answers to the questions you may have. Make sure you ask a number of different questions to ensure it is someone you can trust. Ask whether they are a certified swim instructor and how long they have been doing this. This can help you gain an understanding of the type of experience they possess.

Next, ask the swimming instructor how long the lessons are and how many lessons they would recommend. Of course, this will depend on how experienced of a swimmer you already are and how quickly you learn. However, the instructor should be able to give you a ballpark estimate for how long it will take to turn into a natural.

Another important question to ask is how the instructor will be assessing you during swimming lessons. How are they going to know you are ready to move on to the next challenge or step in the class? How do they know you are a strong enough swimmer to move to the next level of lessons?

The last thing to consider when choosing a school or instructor is cost. Going through a swimming school is typically cheaper than paying for private lessons. Is it worth the extra money to hire a private instructor or would you be better off learning with other students? Money is always in issue with lessons as they do not come cheap.

How to Defend Against a Bigger Opponent With Angled Punches

How to Defend Against a Bigger Opponent With Angled Punches
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Keith_Pascal]Keith Pascal

For many martial artists, the accepted way to defend against a bigger opponent is with their feet. They stop any approach that comes within range with a kick of their own. Still, it is possible to defend against larger opponents with punches -- specifically, angled punches.

The Bigger Opponent Has a Longer Reach

Trying to defend against a long-armed opponent poses a specific problem; his reach is greater than yours.

If you try to reach him with a punch while he's trying to reach you with a punch, then he wins.

Note: We aren't comparing and contrasting styles, angle of the punch, and so on. This is just a basic comparison of reach.

If you block his initial punch, as you reach in for your counter punch, you could still encounter the long reach. Your opponent does have another hand, after all.

Even if you are a Jeet Kune Do practitioner (Bruce Lee's style), you could still encounter problems with your hit-before-check philosophy. The timing will change; you could find yourself too far away to land your punch. Remember those long arms.

Larger Opponent -- If You Can't Reach Him, Then Don't

You could fill an entire book, at least, with advice on distance, angles, and timing for getting past the guard of someone with long arms. We don't have that kind of space in a short article.

Instead, let me offer this advice: If you can't reach your opponent's body, then don't try. This is only logical.

Instead, go for your opponent's limbs, specifically, his weapons. If he tries to kick you, hit his foot ... or ankle. If your enemy tries to punch you, then punch his arm. To paraphrase the Filipino fighters, "Destroy the weapon -- defang the snake!"

Defend Against The Bigger Opponent with Angled Punches

An error that I see in several styles is in teaching their students to punch across the front of their bodies, to try to hit the punch coming in. Their right hands punch across to the left, and the left fists across to the right.

If you want more success at defending the punches of your larger opponents, then try to angle your punches more toward your opponent's torso. You still want to hit the hand, fist, wrist, or forearm; just punch more forward than across.

The forward punch helps protect you from feints and fakes. It's also a better angle for making contact.

Finally, it puts you in a much better follow-up position.

Understanding "Krav Maga"

Understanding "Krav Maga"
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Keith_Pascal]Keith Pascal

I am in contact with a lot of martial artists via the internet. Some of them have told me that Krav Maga hasn't appeared in the Israeli army for about 10-15 years. They claim it isn't taught any more. Others have asked what I know about Israeli martial arts, in general. Well, with the help of some subscribers to one of my ezines, here's a little better understanding of Krav Maga.

Krav Maga Still Taught in the Israeli Army?

This is a good place to start: Let's hear from someone who is there, Nigel Kersh. He wrote, "My son went in [the army] last week, and next week they're getting Krav Maga lessons. Hopefully, his 11 years experience practicing karate will help."

Phil Kouse added that "K.M. was developed ... for the lower echelon troops ... looks like WWll combatives to me." He also mentioned a higher level martial art, that many think is Krav. (Also, Phil provided the correct term for a practitioner of this art, a "Kravist.")

Hmm, another Israeli art?

Eric Duncan helped me refine my search, when he said, "Is not the term Krav Maga a Hebrew term that means to fight or something along those lines, much like Kapap?"

Kapap, An Israeli Martial Art for the Elite

And Bingo, a quick look on the internet, and I found that the elite form of Israeli martial arts is indeed Kapap.

Note: Krav Maga means "contact combat." And Kapap is an acronym for a Hebrew phrase, which means "face-to-face combat."

So, I did some more research and found several pieces of interest about Kapap:
Kapap is older than K.M.
It was developed by Imrich Lichtenfeld in the 1940s
Lichtenfeld was considered an expert in several arts, including ju jitsu, boxing, and wrestling
He used his methods against Nazis and eventually taught his art to elite soldiers (the future Israeli army) (Thanks to an article by Philologos for the information on Lichtenfeld.)

David (no last name) wrote informing me that Darren Levine was the person to bring K.M. to American law enforcement, but David also mentioned that it doesn't in any way resemble the original Israeli style.

David likens the Americanized version to what is practiced by "a bunch of primped up soccer moms."

After more searching, I found that there are at least a half a dozen LARGE organizations, all claiming to instruct Krav Maga. No comment on the individual organizations -- simply, some of the forms of Krav Maga seem more faithful to the original style than others.

Climbers - The Belay Test - How and Why

Climbers - The Belay Test - How and Why
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Chris_Haycock]Chris Haycock

When considering a belay, a belay test should always be conducted. So as to ensure the belay positions stability and security, and ability to support a fall by the climber.

In order to do this the belayer will route their safety line to an anchor point, and then position themselves for a mechanical or body belay. The belayer will then shout "On Belay Test".

The climber will respond "Testing" and proceeds to test the belay with three separate tests. The climber faces sideways to the vertical rock, with the guide hand closest to the rock leading to the belayer. The climbing rope is routed under the buttocks, and the brake hand is placed in the hollow portion of the opposite (guide hand side) hip.

The climber then takes all slack out of the rope between the climber and the belayer, and sits down with approximately a third of their bodyweight. Following this the climber removes the additional slack created by their bodyweight and sits down using approximately two-thirds of their bodyweight.

Finally the climber then removes all remaining slack out of the rope and sits down using all their bodyweight. The climber then springs up and out of the belay test stance, allowing the rope to go slack.

The belayer feels the rope slacken, and if satisfied with the belay position, will shout "Climb". The climber should respond with "Up Rope", or "Climbing". After detaching their safety line and is prepared to climb.

To recap briefly some of the main points of belaying, try to bear in mind the following. (For a more detailed explanation check out my previous articles on belaying).

Determine the guide and brake hands. The rope runs from the climber through the belayer's guide hand, around the belay mechanism (body or mechanical), and to the brake hand. Ensure the rope slide smoothly. NEVER RELEASE THE BRAKE HAND FROM THE CLIMBING ROPE UNTIL THE CLIMBER IS ATTACHED TO AN ANCHOR.

Ensure the remainder of the rope is laid out so it can run freely through the brake hand. Gloves may be advisable when belaying to reduce friction on the hands and rope burns, these can easily get infected.

Make sure the rope doesn't run over sharp rock edges (padding may be required).

Anticipate the climbers needs by keeping alert to their movements. Avoid letting too much slack develop in the rope through constant use of the guide hand. Keep all slack out of the rope leading to the climber, you will then be aware of their movements and be ready if required. Don't take up slack too quickly, you could throw the climber off balance. When taking up slack, bring the brake hand just behind the guide hand. This will allow the brake hand to slide back and remain constantly on the rope..

Just a few practise sessions will make you a competent belayer and a much safer climber. Safe climbers enjoy their climbing more.

Top Scuba Fins

Top Scuba Fins
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Edward_Price]Edward Price

Never overlook the value of quality scuba fins! There are a number of factors that go into making a scuba diving experience a positive one. Among the most important factors is the acquisition of proper equipment. When you have the right equipment such as gloves, masks, and scuba fins, you can feel assured that the time you spend under the surface of the water will be quite the positive one. Of course, there are many different manufacturers of diving fins on the market. Which of these are the best? Based on a number of consumer ratings, Cressi-Sub Gara Professional Fins are among the very best you can acquire. Why is this? Let's look at the many pros (and a few cons) of these fins.

Excellent Comfort

For starters, these scuba fins are quite comfortable and do not force the diver to feel a tight, uncomfortable pressure on the ankle which is sometimes the case with those fins of a lesser quality. When people venture out on a scuba diving adventure, they want to have a lot of fun. Equipment that is comfortable to wear will certainly add to the fun of the trip. These particular scuba fins definitely help in that regard.

Superb Movement

The efficiency and maneuverability of these scuba fins will be a huge plus to any diver. When a set of diving fins can handle well, the ability to glide through the ocean blue is made much easier. This adds to the enjoyment of the process since a lot of "hard work" is taken out of swimming. One reason for this is that the design and shape of the fin blade enhances maneuverability. Also, divers that need to dart quickly can do so thanks to the enormous speed such scuba fins can deliver.

The foot pocket of these diving fins is another nice touch since it adds greatly to the comfort of wearing the fins. The pocket is fairly deep and that allows to comfortable fit various foot shapes and sizes.

Speaking of Deep Pockets.....

One negative associated with these scuba fins can be the price. Yes, these fins cost over $200 which is far more than the price of many other diving fins on the market. Some may prefer to pay the average price on a decent pair of fins, but when you pay for average you may only end up with average performance. If you want a solid performance out of the fins you are purchasing, you will need to pay extra for it. That is just the way the scuba world works!

These fins are generally beneficial for the advanced diver. That is why such unique design has been utilized to craft these particular [http://scubasoul.com/scuba-shop/scuba-fins/]scuba fins. Beginners may be a little irked that a starter kit version of these fins has not been produced but that is just the way things are.

The bottom line here is that if you are a top diver, you will definitely want to purchase Cressi-Sub Gara Professional Fins as they are among the best scuba fins on the market...bar none.

Edward Price has had a keen interest in scuba diving for many years. For more practical tips and information, particularly on the Cressi-Sub Gara Professional Fins and other [http://scubasoul.com/scuba-shop/scuba-fins/]scuba fins, visit his scuba diving resource site now.

Mile 8 of the Pettyjohn Cave Survey

Mile 8 of the Pettyjohn Cave Survey
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Hubert_Crowell]Hubert Crowell

After the Fractured Dome Passage was completed by Scott and Tom, there was a five year period of no surveying that I am aware of. I knew of a few small areas that I knew were not on the map and needed to be surveyed. There still remains all that passage out in Schreiber's Extension that needs to be checked out. I also have a great interest in the northeastern direction, there must be a lot of cave in that direction because I was once told that the water entering Nash Waterfall Cave was traced to Pettyjohn Cave. Nash Waterfall Cave is North of Atwood Point and Pettyjohn.

October 11, 2003 - Scott Carmine and Tom Moltz continued the survey in Fractured Dome Passage.

The survey resulted in 48.18 feet T.H.C. of new cave. Total survey now 37,012.24 feet.

March 31, 2007 - Buddy Davis and I surveyed the lead at the bottom of Doug's Pit located at the end of the Signature Room. This was not on any map and was not well traveled. The passage ended almost 100 feet under the main entrance. There were several nice formations in the 15 by 20 room.

The survey resulted in 97.44 feet T.H.C. of new cave. Total survey now 37,109.68 feet.

February 2, 2008 - Scott Carmine, Daniel Thomson, Will Urbanskie, Kile Klepp and Tom Moltz resumed the survey above the Emerald Pool and named the area "Nervous Breakdown Room", because of the large number huge breakdown rocks and the unstable conditions.

Quote from Tom Moltz "We picked up the survey where Scott and I had left off nine years earlier. We surveyed 277 feet for a THC of 227 feet. A short dig to continue on from our previous survey involved clearing out rocks from a fractured parting. A 31 foot pit connected back to the stream leading to the Emerald Pool. This put the vertical extent at 88 feet. We still had not tied tn the survey to the cave."

The survey resulted in 226.93 feet T.H.C. of new cave. Total survey now 37,336.61 feet.

November 12, 2008 - Scott Carmine, Tom Moltz, Roger Gainer, Jonny Prouty, Kris Fausnight, Kile Gochenour and Ed Pratt completed the survey with a tie in the rest of the cave. Most of the loop surveyed up stream to the Emerald Pool and up at the Pole Climb had already been surveyed, only the section from the top of the rope to the start of the March 29,1999 survey was used in the total T.H.C. distance.

The survey resulted in 75.02 feet T.H.C. of new cave. Total survey now 37,411.63 feet.

February 28,2009 - Buddy Davis, Gene Ellison, Steven Smith, Jordan Brady, John Brady, Scott Carmine and I returned to the Eastern Maze in hopes of finding the seventh mile!

Back on September 20, 2008, Buddy and I surveyed 106 feet in what we assumed was un- surveyed passage. This looked very much like the February 23, 1969 "J" survey but was not in the same location. After a closer look at the tie in of that older survey and reentering all the data I did determine that it was the same. On this trip we had not counted the survey of the Nervous Breakdown Room and assumed that we were only 364 feet shy of the seven mile mark. Having now reentered all the data available I know that we were actually 451.63 feet over the seven mile mark!

The survey did yield some new survey however and we set the marker. Maybe some day the lost survey book of March 9, 1985 will turn up and that 582.4 feet of survey will give a better location for the seventh mile marker.

The survey resulted in 281.80 feet T.H.C. of new cave. Total survey now 37,693,43 feet.

Pettyjohn Cave has grown slowly over the years and now offers more of a challenge than ever before for those who are willing to push hard in their search for the unknown. As four of us lay in a small cramped crawl way waiting for the compass and tape readings, I looked at Scott all bent over in the tight crawl we had just slid down into. I asked how he was doing, he replied I'm happy, I'm caving. I guess that sums it up for most cavers, it is something that is hard to explain to people that have not been caving. Poking into unknown places, pushing hard passages and now and then walking were no one has walked before.

Scuba Diving in the Cayman Islands

Scuba Diving in the Cayman Islands
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Layla_Tusko]Layla Tusko

If there's one place that knows scuba diving, it is the Cayman Islands. Known as the birthplace of recreational diving in the Caribbean, the Cayman Islands were pioneers in scuba diving as a recreational sport to be enjoyed by the general public in the Caribbean and the rest of the world as well. In 1957, the first dive shop was opened on Grand Cayman. Today, there are more than 40 dive shops in operation offering excursions to more than 200 dive sites.

It is made up of three islands that are actually the exposed top of an underwater mountain. The islands are the Grand Cayman, the Cayman Brac, and the Little Cayman. The mountainous nature of the islands contributes to numerous coral structures and vertical walls directly offshore. In fact, most scuba diving locations here can be reached directly offshore or within a few hundred yards of shore.

Scuba diving in the Cayman Islands is as diverse as the marine life that adds awe and beauty to this great place. There is plenty to see and do for every level of diver no matter if you are a first timer, still learning, looking to improve, or are considered a master. You can dive in as little as 20 feet or plunge to the depths of 350 feet or more. The bottom line is that you can find any type of scuba diving experience that you desire and maybe even a few that you haven't thought of yet.

Here is a brief overview of the three islands and of the scuba diving to be found on each:

Grand Cayman - It is the largest of the 3 islands and offers for main areas for scuba diving: the North Wall, the South Side, the East End, and Seven-Mile Beach. Prevailing Southeasterly winds make scuba diving off of the South Side a rarity but the experience is well worth waiting for favorable conditions.

Little Cayman - It is a sister to the Cayman Brac. It is most famous for the Bloody Bay Wall located in the Bloody Bay Marine Park which starts at a depth of only 20 feet. The best scuba diving on the Little Cayman can be found on the north and south sides but all sites are not accessible year round. Another great attraction of this area is the Jackson Bay Area.

Cayman Brac - It is most famous for being home to the only Russian Shipwreck that can be reached by scuba diving in the Caribbean. It rests at a depth of 330 feet and is an amazing sight to behold.

In addition to sheer vertical drops and shipwrecks, scuba diving in the Cayman Islands will bring you into intimate contact with numerous coral reefs and colorful fish and marine life that you have only imagined existed.

How to Remove Muscular Cramps While Diving

How to Remove Muscular Cramps While Diving
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Victoria_Bourbon]Victoria Bourbon

A muscular cramp is an irritating condition that you should take into consideration before and during scuba diving. Aside from the distraction and physical discomfort cramps can cause, they can also cause underwater anxiety which in turn leads to further underwater problems. However, if you do experience cramping while scuba diving, there are several things you can do.

What to Do in Case of Cramp?

First and foremost, as soon as you get a cramp, you need to alert your dive buddy about the situation. That way he or she can help you with your problem. Next, establish neutral buoyancy by breathing correctly. You will need to have practiced buoyancy beforehand in order to do this correctly. Third, stretch and massage the muscle that cramped to ease the pain. Continue to massage the cramped area until the pain disappears. If you're experiencing cramps in your calf muscle, then it is best to grab the tip of your fin and pull it towards you and then start massaging the calf, or have your dive buddy massage it for you.

Safety Tips for Avoiding Muscular Cramps

As you can see, getting rid of muscle cramps underwater involves a certain amount of experience. So never forget that the basic diving techniques you've learned during that time. If you are diving close to the ocean floor, it is best to find an area where you can sit down, rest, massage your muscles. Remember to never sit on corals.

Muscle cramps occur from overexertion or poor physical condition. Be sure to pay attention to your body's condition throughout your whole dive. It is really important that you are in good shape before starting to scuba dive.

There are inherent risks and dangers to scuba diving, and these may cause serious injuries - even death - if you do not train properly for it. Always make sure that your gear is well-maintained and don't start diving until you have completed training at a certified dive centre. Remember, you are going SCUBA diving to have fun, not to put your welfare or the welfare of others in jeopardy.

More Safety Tips to Avoid Cramps

Of course, the best cure is prevention. So here are some more tips to avoid muscle cramps.

1. Fitness. Get physically fit. Basic fitness reduces the risk of muscle cramps
2. Alcohol. Avoid drinking alcohol 12 hours before scuba diving.
3. Water. One of the greatest causes of cramps is dehydration. When scuba diving, you need to drink at least 3 litres of water a day, especially if you are in a hot country.
4. Sleep. Before scuba diving, you should be well-rested. Don't go scuba diving after a wild night's party. You will feel a lot better scuba diving after a good night's sleep.
5. Bananas. If possible, try and eat a banana or two before the dive. Bananas contain high levels of potassium which neutralize salt levels in your blood, one of the major causes of cramps.

Foundations of a Skilled Basketball Player
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Randy_Brown]Randy Brown

All great athletes possess the basic fundamentals of their sport. In basketball, there are many foundational elements that are part of the overall player and their ability. In this article you will read about 10 foundations that all players must work towards. Young players and coaches need to devise a plan to progressive gain each of these characteristics, skills, and abilities.

These are the ten essential foundations of a skilled basketball player:

1. Desire to play and enjoy the game. Without enjoyment, any activity can become routine and boring.

2. Understanding of the game and its purpose. IQ can be gained by engaging in any activity.

3. Balance. This is a building block for all athletes at all levels.

4. Footwork. A player with good footwork can make up for a lot of other deficiencies.

5. Vision and awareness. Players learn where they are, where their teammates are and what the next move needs to be.

6. Decision making process. The game is packed full of hundreds of split second decisions.

7. Changes of speed and direction. For a player to be effective, he must know how to change his speeds and cut at angles.

8. Toughness. This comprises the mental and physical elements of competition.

9. Skill level and potential. As skill level increases so does the ultimate potential of any player.

10. Playing away from the ball on offense and defense. 80% of the game is played away from the ball on both ends of the floor.

These items form the foundation of any basketball player. Young players can learn each of these as they grow and develop as young people. Being active and participating in activities like athletics allow them to gain an awareness of each of these elements. The process of building a foundation may take time but can be accomplished one at a time.

Parents and coaches can use this list to encourage the learning curve and accomplishments of any young basketball player. Playing the game is not based on fancy passes or dunks. Conversely, it has to do with mastery of the above foundations of the game for each player.

Beach Volleyball

Beach Volleyball
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Joshua_Dibbs]Joshua Dibbs

Beach volleyball is a great sport that can played for a very long time.  There are professional beach volleyball players in their late 30's that are still winning titles.  Learning a little bit about how to play beach volleyball can go a long way in helping you be better blocker at the volleyball net or defensive players behind the block.

Let's go over some key things that you must learn before you step in the sand to play the game.  If you think that you will automatically be good at outdoor volleyball because you are amazing at indoor you have another thing coming.  Many indoor players actually start out hating beach volleyball because they are so used to dominating the sport that it's very humbling to get beat by any Joe Blow in the sand.  If you can just bite the bullet during your learning phase of sand volleyball you can become a great player on the beach.  Some things that you will experience are not being able to jump which results in not being able to kill balls.  This bugs a lot of indoor players because that's all they are good at, spiking balls really hard.  You will learn that spiking is not special because everyone can do it, you need to learn how to pass and set with perfect form to be good.  Not every ball is hit hard on the beach, you will learn how to shoot the ball without doing open hand tips.  Don't get discouraged, just keep practicing.

Increase Your Vertical Jump For Volleybal

Increase Your Vertical Jump For Volleyball
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Tim_Archbold]Tim Archbold

Training for the sport of Volleyball can increase the endurance, explosive power and the vertical jump. Volleyball involves lots of jumping and a strong lower body that has the endurance to last many games with out tiring is desirable. Being able to jump for spiking, blocking or setting up shots is vitally important for the player.

Doing drills like spiking and practicing serves, which are important, will not build the strength required for exceptional jumping abilities. An athlete would have to do exercises and drills that would focus on strengthening the thighs to get better at jumping. The act of playing the game of Volleyball can help with some strength but focusing on specific exercises is very important.

Depending on the age and skill levels of an athlete you would decide how intensive the exercises would be to strengthen the thighs? Doing squats or dead lifts would give a good foundation of strength. Other exercises such as lunges and leg exercises on machines would also help. Later doing plyometrics would be the exercise to do for developing a level of explosive strength.

Plyometrics are jumping and bounding exercises used to stimulate the fast twitch muscles in order to produce more power. As good as plyometrics are, you must be careful using them. They place a lot of stress on the legs so they should only be done three times a week at the most and do not over do them during each workout. Give yourself recovery time before the next workout. This type of workout is best used off season so the legs are not over used and game performance compromised.

Mizuno Golf Wedges - A Review of the Latest Wedges From Mizuno

Mizuno Golf Wedges - A Review of the Latest Wedges From Mizuno
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Terry_Gorry]Terry Gorry

Mizuno golf wedges  have always been incredibly popular with amateurs and professionals alike. The current batch of wedges are divided into 3 groups-

Group 1-MP T Series

The T-Series look has a straighter leading edge than the R-Series - an alignment aid favoured by many professionals. The grooves are precision milled rather than forged for the most bite or spin allowed within the rules.

The "T" stands for "Teardrop" and the sole is based around the feedback from Mizuno tour players to give you maximum feel and touch around the greens and they come in standard or custom fitted shafts.

Mizuno consider them to be suitable for low to medium high handicappers. They also come in Black Nickel, which is more expensive than the standard mild carbon steel.

Group 2-MP R Series

The "R" in this series stands for "Rounded" as this wedge has a more rounded design which allows for greater range of shot making and working the ball. Like the T series they can be obtained in either mild carbon steel or black nickel and a black nickel plating or finish ensures some protection against rust and is softer than traditional chrome.

The loft of these wedges ranges from 52 degrees up to 60 degrees and you can have custom fitted or standard shafts with a huge range of lie angles.

Group 3-MX Series

The difference with this group is that these are said to be suitable for all handicaps whilst the T and R series are suitable for low to mid handicaps.

These wedges are cavity backed, unlike the other 2 groups, and are incredibly to use. To assist this Mizuno have employed what they call a "Y" technology which they claim increases the sweet spot to allow for mishits, particularly high into the toe area which is a common mishit spot for most amateurs.

They also use a "Power Bar" and a "Cavity Pad" which helps with playability without sacrificing feel and control.

Why Hockey Goalies Must Bench Press

Why Hockey Goalies Must Bench Press

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Maria_Mountain]Maria Mountain

In my practice as a fitness coach I do not typically need to sit down and convince an athlete that bench pressing is appropriate training for goalies. Typically, I need to convince them that they do not need to bench press and biceps curl on a daily basis. Usually, it is when I am speaking with other fitness coaches that I need to espouse the virtues of bench press training for goalies or any hockey player for that matter.

Okay, I can see the goalies out there reading this article and thinking, "now this is my kind of trainer!" and fitness coaches out there reading it thinking, "this trainer is an idiot!" I do not want to debate either point today, but I do want to point out that there are many bench press variations, some being very useful for hockey goalies.

Variation #1 - The Barbell Bench Press

This is what you immediately thought of when you read the title of this article. It is probably why you clicked through to read it. This variation places the athlete flat on their back on a bench with their feet flat on the floor and pressing a barbell from their chest to an extended elbow position. Does this have any place in the hockey goalie's strength training? If this athlete will be tested in the bench press at training camp, then yes it does! If this is not a part of pre-season testing then in my training for goalies it gets very limited rotation. Because there is minimal stabilization required through the core and hips I think the strength developed with this exercise is not maximally transferrable onto the ice. Remember we are only trying to build strength that we can use on the ice. You are not trying to spend hours in the gym building big dumb muscles that will only weigh you down when it comes to actually playing hockey.

Variation #2 - Dumbbell Press on a Stability Ball

Now we are talking! Pardon me if I get a little technical here, but the first thing you need to keep in mind is the principle that muscles do not work as individuals, they work in chains. So when I think of a dumbbell bench press on the stability ball I am not just thinking in terms of the pecs, triceps and anterior deltoid. I am thinking of the fascial connections that Thomas Myers describes so well in his book Anatomy Trains. The chain of muscle and connective tissue which links the Pectoralis Major (chest muscle) to the Rectus Femoris (six pack muscles) and into the Adductors (groins). Amazing isn't it there is a connection between your groins and your chest muscles! In terms of goaltending, picture the link when you make one of those spectacular glove saves while going down into a split position - stretch on groin, stretch on abs, stretch on chest and shoulder, but no injury!

The first thing to do if you want to try this exercise is to make sure you have a burst resistant high quality stability ball. Do not use one that you picked up at the discount store for fifteen bucks! That ball could burst and serious injury will result.

Now that you have your high quality stability ball you will begin with a load approximately 10-20lbs lighter than you typically use for dumbbell press. Make sure the ball is sitting on a non-slip surface such as a rubber floor. Again, if the ball slides out from under you, you are going to hurt yourself. Sit on the stability ball holding one dumbbell in each hand, resting them on your thighs. Slowly walk your feet forward as you lay back onto the ball. Continue walking your feet forward until the ball is resting at shoulder level and the back of your head is lightly touching the ball. Now lift your hips so you make a straight line from your knees, through your hips, to your shoulders. Hold this position throughout the entire set.

Remember when I talked about the chain of muscles you use when you perform the bench press? Well, performing the same exercise on a stability ball activates another chain of muscles and one that is essential when we are talking about training for goalies. By keeping your hips up as you perform bench press on the ball you are activating the "superficial back line and the posterior functional line". In other words now, instead of training the pecs, anterior deltoid, triceps, abdominals and groin muscles, you are also training your hamstrings, glutes which are huge pushing muscles, back extensors which help you keep your chest up during a long game without slouching in to a fatigued posture and even your latissimus dorsi. That is getting a little more return on your investment of time and effort, isn't it?

Want to get a little bit more out of the bench press? Okay, try this - One Armed Dumbbell Press on a Stability Ball. Once again you will need to use a slightly lighter weight than you used for the two handed version. This variation will bring in the abdominal obliques to a greater extent and your will really feel the glute (butt muscle) on the same side as the dumbbell working hard to keep your stable. When doing this exercise, make sure you keep your hips up and level, do not allow your hip on one side to dip. If you cannot execute the exercise with perfect technique, then lighten the weight until you can. Remember, you are only as strong as your weakest muscle in the link.

So there you have it my argument for why hockey goalies should bench press. Should they only bench press? No. I am actually a huge fan of push up variations and standing cable press, but sometimes the bench press gets discounted as a bodybuilder exercise, when it actually does have a place in training for goalies.

Wrestling Injury Risks

Wrestling Injury Risks
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Joseph_Devine]Joseph Devine

Wrestling, also known as grappling, is a rough contact sport. Because wrestling involves neutralizing your opponent through holds and locks, there is a high risk of injury to joints, the neck, and limbs. Any longtime wrestler knows that the risk of injury is part of competing in the sport, but sometimes unexpected injuries can occur because of other factors.

A serious injury can put a wrestler on the bench for months or even end the wrestler's competitive career. If an injury is caused by an external factor and not by the opponent, the athlete may be the victim of negligence and someone else may be liable.

Negligence and Injuries

There are a number of factors during a wrestling match that could lead to injury in the arena, including:

Not keeping the mat clean and free of debris, causing a competitor to slip and injure himself or herself.

Not enforcing rules against illegal holds, flagrant misconduct, grabbing headgear, or other violations that could result in the serious injury of an opponent.

Not sanitizing the mat, resulting in the spread of bacterial and fungal infections among players, such as ringworm and staphylococcus (staph) that lead to hospitalization or otherwise prevent athletes from competing.

Forcing wrestlers to purposely gain or lose weight to an unhealthy level, causing illness and possible injury.
Why You May Need a Lawyer

If you or someone you know has suffered an injury from any of the above negligent actions, consider contacting a personal injury lawyer immediately. Someone may be liable for the negligent behavior that led to the injury, such as the referee, coach, gym maintenance staff, or another player. A wrestling injury can not only end a wrestler's career but may limit other future opportunities as well.

Negligent behavior should be kept out of sports to ensure that wrestlers can safely and fairly compete without interference. A personal injury lawyer can help protect your interests and hold the liable parties accountable to help ensure you receive the compensation you deserve.
